Calais

We’re heading home. In a change to our usual procedure, which is to stay just outside Calais and walk into town for dinner, we changed our tunnel crossing for the first “free” one tonight, about 9pm, and Rog found us a great restaurant for lunch.

It was Au Koning Van Peene, in Zuytpeene – contrary to what you might expect, in France, though obviously in Flanders. There’s enough parking around the village to spend the night, which we might do another time – it’s only 50 minutes or so from Calais.

Lunch was excellent. We started with eggs with chorizo an crumbs.

Then araignée de cochon, which I knew translated literally as spider of pig, and was hoping for a little more help from Google than this…

We both had cheese next, and a coffee to finish up.

Very good value at €28 for three courses, and the first meal of the holiday where I actually ate it all, and Flynn didn’t get a lovely surprise at his next meal.

I also enjoyed the sign in the loo!

After a couple of hours siesta, we drove to Calais and after a brief shopping stop decided to try the terminal very early for our 9:30pm train. Amazingly, we were allowed to bump to the 7:15pm train for free, which left us enough time to stock up in the duty free.

The train is running slightly late, but all being well we’ll be home around 7:30pm, given the hour’s time difference in our favour.

So that’s it from us, and thanks to everyone who followed along and commented – it was great to have you with us.
